Women on a String
Proverbs 31: 13-25
She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong.
My body of work is built by using a symbolic reference to womanhood in Christianity and the view of women from a worldly perspective, using my own experiences as a point of reference. I am working with the theme of womanhood specifically focusing on how women were portrayed in the bible and how they are seen in today’s society. I am creating the art with the hope to make people aware that women have a rightful place in the kingdom of God. I also want to place emphasis on the fact that women indeed struggle in today's society. Blinded as we try to find our identity.
To capture the role as a woman, I linked my theme and medium with each other. I believe that working with teabags can serve as a jail and how women are bound together with the emphasis on the edges of the teabags. Rooibos tea originates from South Africa, therefore using Rooibos tea as part of my medium choice, will have a significant impact on my artworks as it symbolizes the connection of the South African duties of women.
I have filled the teabags with different spices, to emphasize the fact that all women are so unique with their own identity in God. Creating a biblical message to a theme ‘womanhood’ will light the fact that a women’s identity can be found in God’s grace, linking it to my medium will strengthen the connection that women share.
My aim is to encourage women to step out in faith and embrace their identity in God because He is our creator, sustainer, and our saviour. He placed the Atara, a Hebrew word for ‘” crown”, on our head. We as women have worth. We are precious.
