Goal 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions

This artwork celebrates the lives, legacies, and achievements of select anti-apartheid activists. In a reconstruction of Rahima Moosa, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and at the head, Albert Luthuli, the fight for peace, justice, and a democratic South Africa is remembered. In a glorified image, the emerging figures become the three pillars of Albert Luthuli. Rahima Moosa, coming to emphasize Luthuli’s approach to feminism; Desmond Tutu, representing the prominence of Christianity; and Mandela emblematizing brotherhood and Zulu heritage. The theme of Afro-futurism is undertaken in an attempt to portray these political characters in an elevated, and super-human fashion. A sense of inspiration and nostalgia is evoked as the viewer relives history’s heroics. My comic inspired work pays tribute to the struggle of the African identity under a colonial lens. Through small details of character design, each political figure takes on a uniquely fantastic nature in historical and cultural complexity.
