Magdel van Rooyen (ne Fourie) was born in Pretoria in 1983. She matriculated from Sacred Heart Collage, Johannesburg in 2001. After a gap year as exchange student to Switzerland, Van Rooyen completed her BA (Fine Arts) degree at the University of Pretoria in 2006. She then went on to complete her MA (Fine Arts) at the University of Pretoria in 2012. Since 2007 van Rooyen has been teaching part-time at the University of Pretoria in the Fine Arts division, acting as year co-ordinator and lecturing in different subjects including, painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture.
Van Rooyen works in different media investigating the ‘liminal’ and its influence on personal identity. Specifically questioning the ideas of space and place, belonging and notions of ‘home’.
