Translates to absolution

The work consists of a collage of a letter to the artist’s grandfather layered over a photograph of the artist looking at a projection of an old family picture. The work is about acknowledging and grieving cultural loss through honouring the subjective experience.

Ukuxolelwa is the concluding piece of the imbono yasekhaya exhibition, and deals with the acceptance of a hybrid new-age identity of a black female. Feelings of guilt which evolved into apathy were key to the collage.
