Ordinary life (in the shadow of crisis)

Siphumelele Gumede is an artist currently living and practicing in Johannesburg. Gumede’s art practice is based on the confluence of drawing, printmaking and photography. She has a background in English Literature studies and marries her practices of drawing and printmaking with literature and her own creative writing.

Her practice is currently engaged with the zine and comic culture in South Africa where she explores her position as a young black female printmaker and writer in South Africa. She was recently selected to be one of 8 participants in the “Zine Space” workshop program presented by the Norval Foundation and Dream Press in Cape Town to produce a zine that will be included in the Cape Town Book Art Fair in September 2021.
