El espinazo del diablo (The Devil's Backbone) )

The setting for the film is 1939 at the end of three years of a bloody civil war in Spain. Within this chaos, a ten-year-old boy named Carlos, the son of a fallen Republican war hero, is taken to a remote orphanage haunted by secrets, ghosts and an unexploded bomb in the courtyard. Del Toro considers this film to be very closely connected to Pan's Labyrinth, stating that the Devil's Backbone is a sort of sepia drawing where Pan's Labyrinth is more vibrant.
