Devil's Dessert

Devil’s Dessert

Why devil's dessert? When some of us think or talk about the devil we immediately associate it/the devil with evil or negative connotations. In contrast desserts are sweet and creates positive feelings or as I call them ‘positive vibes’. It is said when using drugs for the first time it gives you that happy feeling or immediate ‘high’. This is then here where you start chasing the drug or 'high' which then becomes evil the more you use and addicted you get. Everything you once stood for, goes out of the window. You will lie, betray, cheat and steal, even to those closest to you.

My artwork called, 'Dear sister' is written by my aunt to my mom where my aunt wrote a thank you letter stating her gratitude for believing in her and loving her even though she stole from them physically and emotionally. Drug addicts will spend countless hours, scheming ways to get more money for more drugs. Their next high is the most important thing to them at that stage and anything that comes in-between this feeling might create a dreadful situation. Their minds will try to fix things that aren't broken. It is just a very sad topic and there are millions struggling with this never ending disease.

My 2021 body of work is created with traditional and non-traditional mediums and consists out of two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks. The non-traditional medium used mostly in my experimentations is CD’s. CD’s in police jargon stands for Controlled Dangerous Substances and fits like a shoe, in regards to my project. I have 7 two-dimensional artworks, 7 three-dimensional artworks and one digital artwork that forms part of my body of work.

This body of work aims to make South Africans and our communities aware of drug addiction. I hope the government really supports this struggle by catching those who are in charge of making and trafficking drugs. As well as I hope that more school learners learn about the consequences of drugs and what effects it has on one’s future and their loved ones. From my side, when I become a teacher my aim is to educate the youth about drugs and drug addiction and hope that it creates some form of impact in their lives. If my words to them mean saving them from an opportunity that might have ruined their future, I feel that I have accomplished the purpose of my job of protecting the youth and future generations.
