This artwork represents ninety-one
days of lockdown during the global pandemic of Covid-19. It consists of 91
squares of canvas material that have been sewn together. Each square represents
one day in which I have experienced different emotions and activities. Each
square was completed on individual days, therefore creating one square per day.
By using my own unique code to represent mundane
activities, I created each square according to specific activities I completed
on the day. The reason for using ink on the fabric was it showed a sense of
spontaneity and change while creating the artwork. Ink changes according to the
dampness of the brush, the direction it has been applied and the wetness of the
fabric, creating different outcomes every time. Movement and transformation are two important
aspects in this artwork as well as adjusting daily routines during lockdown.
Although everyday might seem very similar and routine based, it relates to the
emotion I personally felt during the process of making this artwork. The repetition
of making the artwork every day, the repetition of using the same medium to
create the artwork and the repetition of using the same symbolic codes relates to
how the obsessive habit of routine can make individuals focus and structure
their day in a consistent manner.
