The Banners for Liberty project initially started as an online collaboration between the Theatre Design students from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Dr Stergios Proios) and the Art Education students (Dr Raita Steyn) from the University of Pretoria, during the Covid-lockdown period and peaked into three highly successful exhibitions. In 2021, Greece celebrated their 200-year liberation from the Ottoman rule whilst South Africa celebrated its liberation from the yoke of Apartheid, commemorating the first democratic election of 1994. Inspired by history, the students made use of their banners as national, religious, and socio-cultural symbols to express their own voices for freedom. Students from Greece and South Africa exhibited their artworks at the Pedagogical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece on 30 September 2021 and at the Bensousan Han on 7 October 2021. The banners were brought to South Africa where they were exhibited at the University of Pretoria, Student Art Centre on 26 May 2022.
